Using technology to reduce the cost of data transmission

The Client

The Department For International Development leads the UK's work to end extreme poverty and help to save lives when humanitarian emergencies strike.

The Requirement

DFID were struggling with expensive satellite communication between multiple sites in remote locations. While email communication is vital they needed to reduce the cost and therefore the amount of data being communicated via satellite links.

The Solution

Globe developed a solution that compressed data at a datacentre and then uncompressed it at the remote location.

Our solution included a local mail server that fetched mail from the datacentre and then presented it locally to the users. This stopped all the email users from hammering the link checking for emails.

The web interface allowed easy management of the hardware.

Our solution saved DFID up to 50% on their data transmission costs.
